published in 1936 and dedicated to webern. krasner, playing with the philadelphia orchestra, under the direction of stokowski, gave the work its first performance in 1941. it was not broadcasted and schoenberg did not hear his piece until shortly before his death when he heard a tape of a perfomance by the cologne radio orchestra. friends say he wept as he listened. shoenberg said it was his favorite work."
