Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Like A Lover

What it REALLY must be like to yearn for your heart's desire.

Like a lover, the morning sun
Slowly rises and kisses you awake
Your smile is soft and drowsy
As you let it play upon your face
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the morning sun to you

Like a lover, the river wind
Sighs and ripples its fingers through your hair
Upon your cheek it lingers
Never having known a sweeter place
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the river wind to you

How I envy a cup that knows your lips
Let it be me, my love
And a table that feels your fingertips
Let it be me, let me be your love
Bring an end to the endless days and nights
Without you

Like a lover, the velvet moon
Shares your pillow and watches while you sleep
Its light arrives on tiptoe
Gently taking you in its embrace
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the velvet moon to you

(Bridge)

Oh, how I dream
I might be like the river wind to you

How I envy a cup that knows your lips
Let it be me, my love
And a table that feels your fingertips
Let it be me, let me be your love
Bring an end to the endless days and nights
Without you

Like a lover, the velvet moon
Shares your pillow and watches while you sleep
Its light arrives on tiptoe
Gently taking you in its embrace
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the velvet moon to you

I might be like the velvet moon to you

I might be like the velvet moon to you

(Fade out)

The authors of the song are Sergio Motta and Edu Lobo (from Brazil), aren't they? Please correct me.

Well, according to my crib notes here, the personalities responsible for this piece of poetry are Dorival Tostes Caymmi, Nelson Motta, Alan Bergman, and Marilyn Bergman. Two Brazilians, two Americans. Hope that answers your question.

Dorival and Nelson wrote it (with lyrics in Portuguese). The Bergmans made the lyrics in English.

Yes, I remember hearing the same. I stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying.

Who wrote the lyrics? It is so darn beautiful when sung by Lani Hall. I can listen to it over and over and over, unlike 99% of other songs.

As far as I can tell, these ageless words were penned by the legendary husband-and-wife songwriting team, Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

What a captivating way to express feelings for one's beloved! The imagery in the lyrics, particularly utilizing similes, creates a vivid picture in the mind. The gentle, rhymic melody absolutely sweeps you off your feet, and the talented vocalist is magnificent in her sterling performance, Her voice is like a summer breeze!

I've loved this song since first hearing it several years ago. The lyrics are utterly romantic. You'd never hear such lyrics today. Instead you'd get some kind of trash talk about sex and ho's. We've fallen so far.

In what way is this song risqué? I'm not a student of Mendes but the handful of other songs of his from that era don't seem smutty. Unless it's so heavily veiled that I'm not catching it. Popular music "always driven by sex?" Hmm. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". "The Downeaster Alexa". "Carolina On My Mind". Don't think so, though of course anybody could come up with an interpretation of pretty much anything that alludes to sex.

This music was pretty risque back in its time. One of his songs was even included in the adult porn cartoon "Fritz The Cat". Popular music has always been driven by sex, and Sergio Mendes' music is no exception. And just for the record, he also likes a lot of modern artists whom you probably dislike who sing about stuff like war, feuds and tits (I'm pretty sure you know which band I'm referring to!).
