Three general questions:
1. You happen to meet a fellow pipe smoker. Would you feel a closer kinship to him if he has: (a) very similar tastes in pipes as you but drastically different tastes in tobacco; or (b) vice-versa: very different tastes in pipes but very similar tastes in tobacco as you.
It was cool to see you at the pipe gathering there in Seoul. Looking forward to more of your vids. Cheers. ~Timothy

To me pipes are no more than an instrument for smoking tobacco, so I would be drawn FIRST to the person with similar tobacco tastes. I do enjoy looking at nice pipes though, so it wouldn't detract me from talking about pipe collections either, but tobacco is more important. I would buy tobacco based on recommendation and not on tin art. Finally, I still smoke cigarettes so nicotine hit is not very important as I can get it elsewhere. I do favour stronger tobaccos though.

1. b) the tobacco would peak my interest more as he might know excellent variations. I am a Falcon fan ,seems not many are. 2) Tin art in a store will attract me first, online clever names catch me first. In the end the blend components win out. Though I do not hate any particular leaf types. 3) I smoke cigarettes (still) so nicotine hit is not what I'm after in a pipe, but higher nicotine does slow my cigarette intake. I am addicted to nicotine(bows head, a little ashamed) :-( thanks, gregg

Same tobacco tastes always sparks good conversation. Name is not important but if it has an ingredient in it, will peak interest. I don't like the spins but if it tastes good I will try to prep for the experience. That pipe looks so much like an Ascorti.

I guess tobacco is a broader topic, so I would feel a closer kinship to someone who happened to enjoy the same style.
Blend name is almost irrelevant (although it could be a deal breaker if really distastefull) while good tin art is a welcome plus, but not decisive.
I'm still a cigarette smoker with preference for stronger tobaccos - not necessarily for the nicotine hit (which, even in the stronger blends, is not much... different stuff when comparing to cigarettes - all new topic there).
Cheers
