This is a very long video, because it shows two long coal trains in their entirety.

I went to Moffat Tunnel East Portal in Colorado to see what was going on, and met two westbound empty coal trains charging into the 6.2 mile long tunnel.

  • Are they in notch 8 at the beginning?

  • Not sure. If I were to guess, notch 5 or 6, maybe?

  • Wish I had the time and CASH for GAS to see all this. :)

  • In case I'll have less time and money in the future (and things are looking bleak), I'm trying to railfan as much as possible before it's too late. :-)

  • @cchan006 What is the longest train tunnel in North America? Anyone?

  • @wappaw: Mt. Macdonald Tunnel in British Columbia, 9.1 miles.

  • @BCS716 A couple of Justin Bieber types.

  • How can there be two dislikes, it says "Union Pacific Coal Trains", did they expect naked girls? Stupid voting.... Anyway, nice video, visited the portal a number of years ago! When the coal comes though Rochelle IL the most is three engines, sometimes with a DPU pushing..

  • Nice video, I've seen two BNSF coal trains and one UP coal train up at Fostoria Ohio. :D

  • @BCS716 Totally agree! It's a great rail fanning video that ultimatelly shows what US trains are about: More cars, more engines, more power than anywhere else in the world. Thanks for sharing on youtube!

  • How does the lead engines communicate with the pushers?

  • Not much has changed since I was there in the early 1980's.

  • The six loco thing depends on what kind of train. Empty coal train return with all their power up front, while loads have them distributed. Watched UP put a loaded train together at Grand junction one time. They put the power on in a 3-4-1 arrangement.

  • Thanks you, Videos very nice,

  • My ass hurts sittin here watchin' trains! - I think its gone numb now!
