An historical drama based on the true story of a homosexual love affair in South Africa during the 18th Century, PROTEUS unfolds within the confines of a Cape Town penal colony. Rijkhaart Jacobsz (Neil Sandilands) is a Dutch sailor who has been locked up for violating the strict laws against homosexuality, which at the time treated it as a crime worse than murder. Khoi herder Claas Blank (Rouxnet Brown) is a member of the lowest caste; cleared of his charges, he is nonetheless being forced to serve a 10-year sentence just for being arrested. Despite the strong taboos regarding interracial relationships, the two had an affair that spanned 10 years, but it was eventually discovered, and they were placed on trial. The film--a collaboration between Canadian John Greyson and South African Jack Lewis--is based to a large extent on the court transcripts of these proceedings, with the resulting picture providing a moving exploration of a number of themes that have shaped gay history.

  • A crime for LOVING someone! Imagine all the pain the world could have been spared if men--especially men from different backgrounds--had been allowed to love each other.

  • the story line and acting was good, the props and everything else was pathetic. I mean it was set in 1735 but they were wearing sun glasses, there was a jeep in the movie and the backgroud you could see the high rise of cape town city. I also felt that there was no need for the cheesy secretaries at the beginning.

"Intentional anachronisms - such as transistor radios, electric typewriters and jeeps - are also used in the film to illustrate Greyson's larger theme that homophobia and racism of the type that led to Blank's and Jacobsz' executions are still very much present in today's world."

Yes, I quoted that from wikipedia.

  • wow, 1735, nice to know the world has changed..NOT!

  • ....And what was with the guy putting the bird eyes into what appeared to be a supermarket plastic bag.

  • @me0on0utube

which explains why there have been cases of BM being sodomized while in police custody

  • i see white men have the same "Mandingo" fantasies as white women

  • @bfn1964 thank you. the modern prop thing didn't work for me. It was confusing and it made the story line worse. I think they should have been more succinct in the the way the film was made in its authentic time. Either in the 1700s or during modern times. I really was confusing. We have to remember this is a gay story, and if being gay doesn't have its problems they don't need to make it confusing on film.
