Since the dawn of civilization, man has been engaged in fire making for survival, comfort, and even entertainment! Starting fire for cooking, heating, and even to enjoy its display in the form of fireworks and fire dances are just some of the ways that making fire is used for practical purposes. Another reason to start a fire would be to melt something. Ever heard of the refiner's fire? This is a type of fire that gets to an extreme temperature and melts metal, removing impurities.

Do You know where the "You're fired!" phrase originated? In times of old, when an employer no longer wanted the services of particular employees, he sometimes would burn said persons' homes down, causing an employee to be fired literally! Thankfully this practice is no longer lawful, having long since passed.

There are many ways to start a fire, thus the reason fire making has become an art form. Making a fire without matches can be very simple if you are willing to give it some careful attention and practice. Fire making can be accomplished by means such as flint and steel fire starters (that's essentially how a cigarette lighter works, but cheats with adding easy fuel), a 9-volt battery and steel wool, a magnifying glass, an ice cube(!), friction fire starting techniques, and spontaneous combustion (but let's not go there!) just to name a few.

It's advisable to begin learning fire starting techniques far in advance of when they will be needed (this is always and ever an unknown), so you can be proficient in starting a fire in an emergency/survival scenario, and be confident in your fire making abilities.

Now, go start a fire, but first ask your mommy!
