@shakesshakeshake indie is short for independent.but XL is an independent record label so yeah they still count.

i would say they still are indie. even though a band is signed to a major label that doesn't normally cater to indie bands doesn't mean the band isn't still indie. it all depends on the sound. indie is an abbreviation for individual. and vampire weekend's sound is definitely an individual and influential sound.

Depends on how you label your bands, XL may have big names, but VW still brings the indie way up when recording their albums.
Although, their work is different from everything else i've heard before, so I'm glad they have their own style :)

I really like Vampire Weekend but I don't know how they can be labeled as "indie" anymore. XL Recordings isn't an indie label. XL has major artists like White Stripes, Beck, Cool Kids, Devendra Banhart, M.I.A., Radiohead, Ratatat, Raconteurs, Sigur Ros, Tapes n' Tapes and Thom Yorke. Non are "indie" anymore. Not knocking VW, just saying they aren't indie. They are still really great and I love Contra. I'm happy that they are influencing music in a great way.
