Great version! There's one from 1988 (she's wearing a striped shirt, playing with a band) that's sublime. I'd love to hear that one again.

@charleshenry1100 She lived in Ireland about then. may have been after she split up I believe she was getting away from the scene etc. While she was here she played tiny local village halls. She was alway grateful, and felt taken care of. Well wouldn't you if when you went out for a coffee, and you didn't bring a raincoat and the bell boy form the hotel came and waited outside with his. No here wasn't in trouble for being away so long , cas he was off duty. (woldn't happen these days)

This is some great songwriting by Nanci Griffith — because the melody is strong enough to engage the listener on its own, without the usual band behind her, and with only a some basic guitar for accompaniment.

I was fortunate enough to see Nanci in concert (twice) in the early 90's at the height of her musical prowess. It's an experience I'll never forget.

@charleshenry1100 she looks like she is just reflecting the mood of the song. A sad song need to be sung sad... from inside.... or it fails.

If a singer writes a sad song it could be they are in sad time for real..... and each time they sing the song..they are right back in the bad time of composition.... All about emotions..... and fake doesnt work,,,, thats why she is so real.

we are going to see her tonight in Ann Arbor, Michigan. First time. Wish I would have seen her years ago when I first started listening to her (1980's).......she seem tired in this vid, worn out...........

My God ,what's happend to Nanci?? She is crying, but not about the missing rain.

Was she in bad condition at that time? But in the next video > chin-chin 9253< she is lauphing again,thank God. I love her and I was really shocked when I saw this video.
