McCain Advisor Uses Dishonest Talking Point on Bush Tax Cut

Carly Fiorina, one of John McCain's economic advisors, blatantly contradicted John McCain's previous position on President Bush's disastrous 2001 tax cuts. Ms. Fiorina responded to a challenge from an MSNBC anchor David Schuster "Wait a second. [McCain] was against the bush tax cuts then. In favor of comprehensive immigration reform. Two key issues where he has flip-flopped."

Fiorina ardently responded, "Actually, NO. He was against the Bush tax cuts in 2000 because he said they were not accompanied by spending restraint."

Well actually, NO. McCain said at the time, "I voted against the tax cut, I voted against it because I didn't think that there was sufficient relief for working Americans." There was no mention of opposing Bush's tax cuts because of no "spending restraint." It's just not true.

Here is what McCain submitted to the Congressional Record on May 26th, 2001- about a month before they passed- clearly mapping out that he opposed Bush's tax cuts because they were not aimed at the middle class.

McCain Opposed Tax Bill Since Benefits Were Concentrated On The Rich. "Mr. President, I rise to oppose the Conference Report on the Reconciliation bill. I do so after having expressed hope that the progress we made in the Senate bill to scale back the benefits going to the top rate taxpayers to make room for more tax relief to lower income Americans would prevail in the final tax bill. During the debate on the Senate version of the tax reconciliation bill, I had urged my colleagues that substantial tax relief to middle income Americans should be our top priority. While I regret that my amendment to cut the top rate by one percent to 38.6 percent so millions more middle class Americans would fall into the 15 percent tax bracket failed on a tie vote, Senator Grassley did move in that direction in the Senate bill by insisting that the top rate should be cut to only 36 percent. As a result, I reluctantly voted for the bill but pledged to vote against the Conference Report should further reductions in the top tax rate be made at the expense of the majority of Americans who are in much greater need of tax relief." Her agenda is to poke holes in Obama's proposals, but clearly she understands and is willing to keep our troops in Iraq AND blatantly admits that the people are going to have to pay more for gas. Does she know more than we do on the oil companies, YES! It appears to me that she has a damned if do or damned if we don't mentality about oil profits and tax cuts.
