Venezuela's democratic government allowed RCTV to continue broadcasting for nearly five years following RCTV's involvement in the US backed coup of 2002. The RCTV broadcast licence was not renewed in 2007. A survey showed that about 70% OF Venuzuelan's would support a renewal of the licence in order to continue seeing some of their favorite soap operas.
RCTV's political background is suspicious however. RCTV supported a coup in which Chávez was held captive for two days in 2002. Following this, RCTV consistently violated a range of telecommunications regulations, leading the government not to renew its broadcast license when it expired.
This video clip is an extract from the bbc documentary "the revolution will not be televised". The documentary reveals footage highlighting the distortions that the private US-backed media used to mislead public, and thereby to destabalize venezuela's democratically elected government in the 2002 coup.
