Part 1 of 2 :

~ found this very nice cassette demo while in the tool shed,
left here from a previous tenant over 15 years ago.

One of the most interesting of that dingy -
'been out in the soggy shed for at least 15 years'
cardboard box is a very early if not the earliest Demo Tape (4 song EP)
by West Coast Canada Pop singer Holly McNarland,

who had a prominent rise in the late 90's on the mainstream radio scene.
She might have been one of the CBC darlings from what I can remember.
Probably not anylonger as the CBC is taft.

Songs on tape :
1. Tiny War
2. Crazy
3. Fish
4. Madman

So she and her band (uncredited, which is shameful, they are solid I especially dig the bassplayer with a good grounding style with some noodle thrown in) The "band" go through some styles that would make some of her fans kind of double take as it's not electronically enhanced like her voice is today. Sure she belts out great Live
(it shows on this tape) but they process her voice on the radio cuts like they really should-not,
because she has some chops!

The styles range from that common folky-femme sound of the early 90's to a very cool
hybrid punk-psych-screamo sound with a basement production vibe that adds charm.
Online, when musi-historians mention when she started they say 1995.
I have to guess this tape is under-the-radar to most and it does not show up in her
discography anywhere. Not even reincarnations of these songs, unless she changed the names around.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I'd never heard either of these songs. They're beautiful and edgy, just like Holly!

  • Thanks for these. I've always loved Holly. I saw her years ago at the Town Pump in Gastown! Was a cool place back then to watch live bands. She has a voice of an angel. I was just going through her vids for old times sake tonight. "Stuff' was so huge then.
