Kathleen Ferrier sings Gustav Mahler's Kindertotenlieder
Wenn dein Mütterlein
tritt zur Tür herein,
Und den Kopf ich drehe,
ihr entgegen sehe,
Fällt auf ihr Gesicht
erst der Blick mir nicht,
Sondern auf die Stelle,
näher nach der Schwelle,
Dort, wo würde dein
lieb Gesichten sein,
Wenn du freudenhelle
trätest mit herein,
Wie sonst, mein Töchterlein.
Wenn dein Mütterlein
tritt zur Tür herein,
Mit der Kerze Schimmer,
ist es mir, als immer
Kämst du mit herein,
huschtest hinterdrein,
Als wie sonst ins Zimmer!
O du, des Vaters Zelle,
Ach, zu schnell
erloschner Freudenschein!

When your mother
steps into the doorway
and I turn my head
to see her,
my gaze does not alight
first on her face,
but on the place
nearer to the threshhold;
there, where
your dear face would be
when you would step in
with bright joy,
as you used to, my little daughter.
When your mother steps
into the doorway
with the gleam of a candle,
it always seems to me as if
you came in as well,
slipping in behind her,
just as you used to come into the room!
O you, a father's cell,
alas! too quickly
you extinguish the gleam of joy!
so beautiful!

I wish there was a "LOVE" button in addition to the "Like" & "Dislike". She had such a noble, mother-earth sound.

So Beautiful. No wonder it was played at Nico's funeral in 1988.

@bbbartolo No. Ferrier was Britain's and probably one of the world's most accomplished contraltos. Sang everything, with ease. Her Bach and Schubert...and folk...and hymns etc etc etc are to die for, and poeple were falling over themselves to book her. Such a rare, rare gift and truly is other-wprldly. hey, but I'm a fan and would swap to contralto without a moment's pause if it were possible :)

was she limited to the mezzo range? she seems to dip into the contralto register... anyway I may like these better than Baker's, and that's saying something! (Baker is swamped by Baribolli's orchestra, so maybe it's hard to compare anyway)

Well here is maybe the first.
Wunderschönes und trauriges Lied. Und die Sängerin ist sehr begnadet.

Kathleen Ferrier's recordings of Mahler are a reference! All singers that attempt to sing Mahler should refer to these!!! It's as if they were catered to her talent (rather than the opposite).
She was one fervent Mahlerian... and she had the chance to work with Walter, a pupil of Mahler and another fervent Mahlerian...
♥ Mahler! ♥ Ferrier!

It is one of my favourite interpretation of that sad songs. It's so beautiful and touchig, especially 1,28 and 3,23. I always cry at that moments...
