This video is the introduction to the crochet-along for making a convertible beanie-hood-cowl.

The viewers will learn to use the slip stitch to create a super stretchy knit-like fabric, and in turn, make the item in the pattern.

The pattern is entitled, "The Convertible" by Deborah E Burger. Ms Burger has kindly given me permission to use her pattern.

  • I love this! 2 questions, is this hat that you are demonstrating in this video the 12 inch or the 15 inch version? Second question, do you think this could be made with a smaller hook as long as you make it 12 or 15 inches in total (I know it would have many many more rows) or would you recommend using the larger hook?

    Thanks,

    Wretha

  • @TreasureGift The demo is the 12 inch size. It could be made with a smaller sized hook but it will effect the stretch. If you use a finer yarn, then yes, you can use a smaller hook. But I would not go much smaller thank an N with #4 medium yarn.

  • Ok I want to make this convertible, but I have a question on it. I have an yarn I bought on sale for $1 a skein several years ago. It is lion brand wool-ease, problem...it is only 3 ply and is considered sportweight....so how would I make hat with this yarn. ty

  • @mlwatkins1959, Wool Ease will work well with this pattern. The key is to check your gauge. Watch the gauge swatch videos and you will see I had yarn that did not work to gauge. I just made sure I made the piece 12 inches square.

  • @Bethintx1 I am now making this hat, I went out and purchased a set of 4 large crochet hooks. I am not worrying too much about counting rows on this one, I'll stop when it gets to 12 inches in length. I am amazed at how thick and stretchy this is, especially considering I'm using such a large hook.

  • Could you maybe post a video of you wearing it to see it on a actual human? hahaha Also, how would you make it more loose and drapey? Just more rows

  • Beth, first I want to say that your videos have been an inspiration to me. I thank God for putting you in my path if only through your tutorials. I have crocheted for many years but never knew how to read a pattern till a few years ago when I decided I was going to teach myself and that did alright for the most part. Watching your video's I just made the beret...would have never done something like that if not for you.
