@woo081 lol unfortunately this problem goes way beyond America. This is a sort of thing a number of certain kinds of Protestants will say that just doesn't make any sense. Anyway, the cool thing about Buddhists is they probably weren't even offended.
"i'm not a religious person but i have a relationship with jesus christ" this comment sums up how stupid the average american is. Buddhist don't worship the Buddha the bow to him out of respect.
8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and accused the Jews. 9 They spoke and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, live forever! 10 You, O king, have made a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the gold image; 11 and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”
To some of the comments: idiots cannot insult a wise man, for the wise man knows his way is higher. A confident irreligious man will look at religion & be calm, for he knows the religious are deluded and cannot harm him. But a wise irreligious man will be calm because he knows true calm comes from detaching himself from fearing delusion & harm. He who speaks is foolish; the listener is wise because his foolishness is hidden; i write this here only for compassion & hope you will not take offense
sigh.... first off that was quite disrespectful of that lady to leave. Buddha is not said to be a God, at the in of most prayer we say Namu Amida Buddha which is basically say that he is/was not supernatural he was just a normal person like us. 2nd the waitress was even more disrespectful just being ignorant of practice and tradition of the people whose land they are inhabiting.
Indian religions are quite different from Western ones. In Abrahamic faiths the God DEMANDS absolute obedience and submission, lest he tortures them in hell..In Dharmic religions there is no concept of blasphemy, fear of god, sin (absolute), apostasy, judgement, hellfire etc etc...So it really doesn't matter whether you bow or not or choose to regard a belief or not. Gautam Buddha himself was a heterodox and a spiritual atheist who advised people to choose reason and logic over blind dogmatism.
