This is the second time-lapse map video I have created. This one shows the connections to the PonyChat IRC Network (http://ponychat.net/) from 00:00 UTC to 17:36 UTC.
As with the previous map, it is important to remember that locations may be very approximate or just outright incorrect. And because of limitations of the database I use, only about 65% of the connections that were open actually got mapped.
IP geolocation is a very imprecise art, since IPs are often assigned to any location in a given region. For the purposes of this map, however, it is safe to assume that dots are "close enough."
This was generated with a fancy Ruby script which analyses log files and looks up IP address locations with MaxMind's free city geoip database. If you're interesting in taking a peek at the code, just contact me on irc.ponychat.net (I am Kabaka on there).
