Thought this was the beginning of rod bearing problems, turned out to be a loose spark plug.

  • How's the car running now?

You say it was just the spark plugs?

  • @ANiMOSiTYZA Yeah it was just one loose spark plug. I've put on probably about 8,000 miles without any issues.

  • So this is what happens when you read M5Board too much. Got it up on a lift at a shop by my house and we thought it may have been an exhaust manifold gasket. I took it to the guy who worked on my old M5 a bunch -- he figured out that it was a spark plug somewhat loose in there. Tightened it up and the sound went away! Not an expensive problem at all, haha.

  • PUSH THE CLUTCH PEDAL IN IF IT STOPS THEN ITS YOUR TRANNY BUT IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE VANOS SYSTEM IS GOING BAD.

  • @Hoodrichbiatch Thanks. Tried that out -- it doesn't stop. It sounds more like it's coming from the back and down low in the motor, not from the VANOS units. But we'll see soon.

  • thanks you for your video. my car mad the same sound. so today i check my spark plugs.

i found two loss spark plugs. then i tighten them. then no more taking sound ;-)

  • @shep89 Good to hear! These are such lovely cars, aren't they!

  • It's not VANOS..

If it was VANOS, you'd hear it when the camera was at the top of the engine.

It *could* be the start of a rod bearing going bad.. but *if* it is, then youve caught it VERY early and your chances are that the crank is fine.

However.. Rod Bearing noises are usually deeper than that.

This sounds more like a tapping than a knocking. Rod Bearing knock is a deep, heavy sound.

It could be an exhaust manifold leak; or a cam lobe; or a bad hydraulic lifter.

    But get it checked soon!

  • Ce bruit ce sont les vanos abimés.

  • I have a similar sound in my 350Z. Shep, please check your private messages

  • noise seems like its coming from the vanos...
