Dr. Todd Baron, a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist, discusses symptoms, diagnoses, and management of bile duct stones. Many bile duct stones are found in the gall bladder and are managed by surgically removing them, which can often be done laparoscopically. Dr. Baron also discusses technique for removing difficult cases of bile duct stones by using a shock wave device to break up bigger stones into smaller stones

  • your video is excellent! I had my gallbladder removed and still have severe pain in my liver region area, hepatitis was neg, I had a upper endoscopy, didnt check bile duct I am in severe pain every day and had pancretitis I do not drink liquor or use drugs the problem is the drs think ur a hypochrondiac when they cant figure it out! i getting help from an interm gi dr at mizzou univ.. please help!

  • Dr. Baron's reply part 1. Some patients have pain that feels like gallbladder pain without an obvious source such as stones in the bile duct. If there is no doubt that you had an attack of acute of pancreatitis and if there are no other possible causes for it pancreatitis (such as medications), then you might have a problem with the bile duct or the tiny sphincter muscle that normally allows the bile duct and pancreas duct to drain into the intestine

  • Dr. Baron's response part 2: An evaluation for this problem can be done. However, more information is needed than what you have given and probably cannot be done without a thorough evaluation.

  • Hello Dr. Baron. I am going to see a GI on Feb. 2nd for some abdominal discomfort. On the 1st of this month I went to the ER and they found that I had a slightly high bilirubin level in my blood. I went to an internal medicine specialist a few days ago and they are monitoring my liver because of a small spot that has "no mass effect". The discomfort started a year ago and felt like getting a stitch under my right rib. I tried a gallstone cleanse and was wndrng what you think about that? Advice?

  • Thanks for this explanation. I got my gallbladder removed and i'm having the same type pain as my gallbladder attacks every time i eat. I go in for an ERCP on Monday but i don't have any jaundice or fever so am worried they are not going to find anything.

  • One more thing i'd like to say, what the person below said about being treated like you're a hypochondriac or something because nobody has taken the time to figure out what is wrong is a horrible feeling. I just got talked down to like a dog by a doctor yesterday who has a foreign accent, because I took the time to ask questions and make sure I was understanding him correctly because of his accent. It was real classy. Anyway, thank you for explaining this, many will benefit from watching this.

  • Thanks for making this video doctor. I'm thinking I may be experiencing something wrong with a duct right now. I had my gallbladder out in July for a low ejection fraction but have horrible tightness across abdomen now, a distended abdomen, pain in lower and upper back and across abdomen. Tomorrow i'm having and mrcp and then possibly and ercp depending on what it determines.

  • He doesn't mention choledocholithotomy here does he? Only ERCP and choledocholithotripsy? Fantastic video

  • Does Crohn's disease ever cause gallstones, and if so, how?
