This is an audio recording made just before I went into hospital for emergency treatment for what turned out to be an invasive streptococcus infection. My treatment, which included isolation from other patients (and therefore a private room) would have cost the NHS many thousands of pounds, a cost I was not billed for. We in the UK pay for the NHS with higher taxes, but the security it provides us with during a time of need, and the reliability and dependency of that security, is in my opinion, invaluable.
The quality of the sound is quite poor, and the speech a bit of a ramble, but I think it does show that the thousands of defences and messages of support for the NHS that can be found on websites such as youtube are not just the empty words of healthy people.
During this recording I was in septic shock, and somewhat delirious, which I think comes across in my voice. But the quality I hope that comes across in my voice here is what could be interpreted as complete lack of fear. In reality it is complete faith in the NHS. I knew how sick I was, I also knew I would get better. Lo and behold, I did.
The premium number system was bad. But it was the idea of certain doctors nbot the NHS and I believe that it has been banned. NHS GPs are mostly private businessmen and women running services on contract to the NHS but they are not allowed to charge patients for NHS services. Answering the phone IS PART OF THEIR NHS CONTRACT and cannot be charged for.
