Yes, there should always be a cardboard cake board underneath your cake. If there's no cake board, then the straws underneath will go into the bottom of the cake on top. The straws are holding up the cake board. Always a cake board. :)

Was there a cake board under the 8 inch cake or did you you directly stack the cake on top of the other? I always leave the board, but I was just curious because I couldn't tell.

Hi Monica, The cake boards are not that thick and if you sharpen your dowel pretty sharp, it's actually very easy. Just need a little bit of pressure and voila! :)

You pull them out before you start slicing the cake. :)
