September 12, 2001 at Disney's California Adventure because of the events of September 11 (read my story http://bit.ly/911ASD), Disney's Electrical Parade starts to bring life back to normal.

In 1996, Disneyland advertised that The Main Street Electrical Parade was going to "Glow Away" forever. Fortunately, that turned out to be less than entirely true. While the parade hasn't returned to the original Disneyland Park, Disney sent the parade to NYC for the opening of the movie Hercules, and then it sent it to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World for the Millennium Celebration (a video is posted on this YouTube Channel). In 2001, when the newly opened Disney's California Adventure turned out to be less popular (by a lot!) than management thought it would be, they shipped this back to Disneyland to play in the new park across the esplanade (and this video was created). With projected over-crowding at the newly renamed Disney California Adventure in connection with the opening of Disney's World of Color, they again shipped this parade back to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World for Summer 2010 and beyond (I watched recorded it there in HD on September 13, 2010).

There was also a second full version of the Main Street Electrical parade that had been created for Walt Disney World that eventually got sent to Paris Disneyland and if you visit my YouTube channel, you'll find that I posted video of it from January 1999. Since Disney said it was "Glowing Away" from Disneyland, I visited Disneyland, April 28, 1996, and that video is also on my YouTube channel (http://asdtubeU.asdhollywood.com).

Video by Alan S. Dalinka.

The whole parade has been edited down to YouTube's 10 minute limit with the audio recorded live and, for most of this video, in synch with the original video. • I will tell you!!! We all were FREAKING OUT especially seeing the F16's flying over and the bomb squad dogs backstage!!! I was playing Dopey at the time and boy did we all have nightmares of bombs coming in on us during this parade... NO JOKE!!!

  • @disneydancer99 I don't remember any F16s on 9/12. As a guest, I remember seeing an occasional bomb squad dog, and I remember an occasional helicopter which, alone, was enough to get folks (include me) into a bit of a panic, as everything civilian was grounded (if the commercial planes were flying, I would have been home from my business trip by 9/12 rather than at Disneyland).

  • The actors are all smiles, but you kind of have to wonder what was going through their heads, being the day after 9/11 when no one really knew what was going to happen next or who would be the next target.

  • @SoaringEagle2005 That's very true. Disney's cast was very professional and a welcome break from sitting in the hotel watching the replays while I waited for a way to get back home.

  • Wow...that music is really annoying.

  • @TerryT1976 I have a picture from 2004 when it still said "A California Classic".

  • @Disneydanny I'm guessing around 2005 at the time of the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland when they started the parade at Paradise Pier and changed the Drum's sign from "A California Classic" to "Presented by Sylvania".

  • @TerryT1976 any idea when they finally stopped playing that pre=parade announcement? (the one w/ the woman's voice I remember seeing it at least a year after it had been back and they were still playing it

  • Great memories of this classic Parade. When I worked at Disneyland Park, I always looked forward to those nights of going to DCA for dinner or coffee/pastry to sit and watch DEP. Just hearing that pre-parade announcement of its return nearly has me tear up as 2001 was a year of mixed emotions. I celebrated my 3rd anniversary with Disney, which was a milestone but came at a sad time with the passing of a dear friend. Then, of course was 9/11. Thanks for sharing a wonderful memory.
