NASA is also using this Apollo type spacecraft to prevent a Near Earth Asteroid from impacting earth and the goal of private space industry is build a space habitat called Stanford torus.
Dragon and Dreamchaser are being developed with funding assistance from NASA under the COTS program. Dreamchaser is directly derived from NASA's HL-20. SpaceX has good ideas and plans, but so far they are not fully operation. No one will beat NASA to the moon, because NASA has already been there.
its too bad they scrubbed most of this project but at least they keeping the Orion capsule, hope it comes online soon

Bush had hand in the creation of this program and has anything the man done ever worked out?

Actually yes they will dragon and dreamchaser match or exceed the Orion in capabilities.
Spacex has a cryo upper staged F9 with a 50ton payload and the 100ton falcon BFR.
The engines the merlin 1c for falcon 9 already exist while nothing for Ares I exists at this moment in time.
If you ask me it looks like they'll beat NASA.

There is a lot more to space than the moon. Asteroids are easier to get to and provide a lot more science and revenue.

Private space industry won't be going to the moon without help from NASA.
