Sweet facial hair! Terminology wise that is not a van-dyke (which is disconnected 'stache and beard), it is really a tail-back. And a handlebar stache is where it curls up, not down. What you had is a horseshoe or biker 'stache.

Yeah, it's stop motion animation. I used istopmotion on my Mac. Great program for under $40. The transitions are a little choppy because I took the pictures myself, should have had someone else man the camera.
