The title sequence of The Rat Catchers from 1966. A popular ITV series of the mid-sixties. According to an article in the Rediffusion staff magazine from December 1965, the girl in the sports car was different every week. There were 13 episodes made.

  • Dear retunerman thanx so very much 4 postin' this Iv'e been searchin' 4 the theme 2 this programme 4 YEARS. I remember playing out as a kid on Sunday afternoons with this tune roaring in my head, all those years ago !! It really stuck in my mind from the previous night's showing. Many years later I heard it on the Brian Matthew show just B4 the 9 o clock News (Y'know that bit where they play a theme 2 a TV show etc.) and hurriedly put a blank cassette in my Blaster!! only 2 get 1/2 of it !!

  • Glad to be of service. I have the whole theme tune on CD somewhere. I'll try and do an upload when I get time. It's a great tune.

  • Does anybody know who composed the theme tune? I've got a 4 min version somewhere where the Brigadeer opens up with "Are you paying attention?"

  • I think it might be Johnny Peason, but I could be wrong.

  • Sadly most of it with the exception of the first episode has been wiped. This episode appeared on a file sharing site, so the film print exists somewhere, but not in an official archive. The recording originated from the U.S, confirming my belief that there are prints of missing British shows still residing over there in private collections.

  • Note the lack of crash barriers on the motorway and that there is hardly any traffic. I can remember when our roads were like that.

  • @nomoresurfingforyou - the theme has been made available on a CD: "The Sound Gallery volume II" (EMI 8 52990 2; UK 1996). The Ratcatchers theme is in stereo on that disc (by Johnny Pearson, of course). As I write (July 2011), Amazon UK has over 40 s/h copies available from about £12.

  • I adored 'The Rat Catchers' & remember being glued to it every week- along with my Mum.We loved Glyn Owen best, as we remembered him as nice 'Paddy' from Emergency Ward 10-always seemed decent & dependable-the kind of bloke you'd want on yr side in a fight too! Spy series were very popular & this was a bit like The Avengers, & later The Sandbaggers,Callan & Spooks.Johnny Pearson's theme was one I've NEVER forgotten. Thanks for posting, it brought back gr8 memories

  • Aah the empty motorways - cheap petrol - no speed cameras - but alas - 'Little Chef' was already there.

  • Shouldn't someone make a concerted effort to get these things back, before some idiot decides to destroy them too?

  • I'm, really --so NOT gay -but I bet there were more women-or BIRDS-as they were known in those days would have prefered a tough-talkin' workin' class ex-cop (Glyn Owen) than the suave-ponsy,charachter that Gerry Flood was playing-who always seemed 2 get the girl !!!!

  • Brilliant! I searched for a possible "Rat Catchers" video because the theme tune of this programme had stuck in my head for all these years since I watched it back in the 1960s. Now that I hear it again here, it just (understandably) sounds a bit wobbly because of the age of the media.
