On March 16, 2011, the MV Oliva, a freighter carrying soybeans from Brazil to Singapore, ran aground at Nightingale Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Fuel from the ship spilled into the water and onto the shore, and the local population of endangered northern rockhopper penguins came in contact with the oil. National Geographic Expeditions' contributor Andrew Evans arrived March 23rd, and filmed what he saw.

  • Why do oil companies have to be so greedy? This makes me mad, with the technology now days we are able to make efficient energy, and run any engine or appliance without these fossil fuels... Uhh when will we as humans learn? Just when you think we can't possibly fuck up any other life form’s way of life, we cause another atrocity or commit another brutality or massacre. I’m starting to get sick of humanity, is there anyone that can share some hope with me?

  • I hate oil. So much.

  • FILHOS DA PUTA.. NINGUÉM é PUNIDO... NUNCA..

  • @Ibriam We are moving towards renewable energy, annual growth for solar and wind installations annual is above 30-40% as for the bad news the oil companies love to say "we support renewables" but then "oops spilled some more oil im not paying to clean up"

  • @soccerkat0214 thats true, all of the buildings being built and rainforests destroyed and flower gardens destroyed. Its been said before that if every bee became extinct that the human race would fall 4 years later and its very very true and bees ARE dying in record numbers because of bee syndroms and lack of flowers

  • I hate saying that I hate being a human cause we shouldn't hate ourselves but I really do wish I was a tiger or a cat or something that doesn't harm the earth like us...

  • I think we humans need to remember were not needed on earth were like guests and were desroying animals homes. We need animals/plants to live but they don't need us to live.

  • Just saw saved by the bell the one about the oil spill it was so sad i cried all this oil isn't worth it none of these creatures did anything wrong we did when by getting greedy but they pay the price with the lives how sick is that

  • @Ibriam None. Sorry!

  • Thank you for the update. I'm relieved to know that they've been penned in (at least some of the Rockhoppers), so that the rescuers can try to minimize the effects. Hats off to the wonderful folks who are helping these beuatiful creatures!

  • @Ibriam You shouldn't be disgusted by humanity, you should be more focus on those who cause harm on others, such as the oil companies and lieing government officials. There are many people like yourself and of course myself included, who strongly believe oil companies are greedy assholes.

  • @hasaywha As did I.
