  • Instead of building these souless plastic DMU's,they should build a fleet of these to get people to travel by puplic transport..... I mean who WOULDN'T want to travel behind that!!

  • My generation is so deprived of beautiful machines like this. They are ALIVE, they breathe, they make music as they power their way along the tracks. What do we have now....bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz click click click

  • @psychopathy33 in holland and germany all trains on the mainline have to be fitted with the safety system (ATB, PZB90) but unonfortunaly there cutting on everysthing so also on mantainance of trackt!!

  • @lotwyo . The 'pen-pushers' in London wanted to close the Mallaig 'extension' of the West Highland Railway (in the 1970's, Mallaig to Fort William). Scottish Region (now ScotRail) had other ideas -- they introduced 'The Jacobite' steam train. The line still hasn't been closed.

Main-line steam engines are fitted with the latest signalling devices, otherwise they would not be allowed to run. However, they are too 'labour-intensive' for modern transport -- 3 hours to reach full pressure!

  • @matthijsspoor3 . That's right, power stations are still steam powered, even nuclear stations! Safety? How about Potters Bar, Morpeth, Carrbridge, and various level crossings? How about signalling? Main-line steam is fitted with the latest, and, we used to test the points every 3 months (British Rail, S & T, 1979), now, they only test them every year. It's called 'saving costs'. Is it 'safer'?

  • @lotwyo but there never happen accidents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! never, only when a car driver thinks that these trains are slow... but they aren't. the whole world was chanching by strains. in a positive way. without steam your house wasn't powered and we didn;t have railways cars and much more. and your car smells to and is dirty. but not on the driver seat and in a coach its also clean. so what did you want to say???

  • I get sick of these people saying these trains were cool. You would get dirty and smelly due to the mix or combustion carbon + water. No aircon. MUCH more dangerous because they can't be fit with proper safety systems.

So while they are nostalgic, they are also unsafe, and not suitable for mass transportation.

  • @blaster2012 greenpeace? haha for the rest everyone!

  • The Flying Scotsman was the train for me ,nothing beats the steam train, might be slower but what a journey on these fine beasts

  • @japsniper007 That is because steam power itself is just graceful. Steam surrounding plainly visible mechanics, working like clockwork, and moving gracefully. Internal combustion engines lack this grace as they are hidden behind a dull cast engine block, almost as if embarrassed to show its workings.
