I usually don't buy into all the shows that use meaningless symbolism in an attempt to seem "deep"(*cough* Evangelion), but this show really is a masterpiece when it comes to storytelling and character development. Great video.

The reason it doesn't make sense to some people (in my opinion) is because it was designed to be abstract by nature, with simplistic backgrounds conveying more than complex ones. The different frames provide a third point of view on the situation, and such as the frames for those past flashbacks, make it even more dramatic (or funny) in a way. Bakemonogatari just requires you to think outside the box. :) (again, just my opinion on things, not to be taken as fact)
