Waquoit, ridden by Chris McCarron, held off a late stretch drive by Broad Brush, the favorite, for an upset victory yesterday in the 53d running of the Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs in Boston. Waquoit, the top horse in New England last year, broke out immediately to lead the six-horse field and stayed in front until the sixteenth pole. Broad Brush, ridden by Angel Cordero, put a head in front, but McCarron urged Waquoit on and won by a nose. Broad Brush carried topweight of 126 pounds, conceding from 4 to 17 pounds to the rest of the field. Waquoit, who carried 117 pounds, was timed in 1:49 for a mile and an eighth and returned $10.60 for $2 to win. He earned $124,560 for his owner, Joseph Federico, from the total purse of $207,600. Finishing third was Tour d'Or, ridden by Tammi Campbell.
Tammi Cambell (rider of 3rd place Tour d`Or) is now know as Tammi Piermarini. On Monday August 22, 2011 Mrs. Piermarini rode Suger Trade to victory in the 3rd race at Suffolk Downs, thus becoming the 5th female jockey to win 2000 races. 1586 of those 2000 wins came at Suffolk: a good career for the Massachusetts native.

This was a heartbreaker. I adored Broad Brush. Thank you for this. This Mass Cap was a stellar field.
