Many older shotguns have barrels that are badly pitted and need to be polished before shooting them. This GunTec video teaches the process of honing shotgun barrels to remove pitting using a Sunnen brand hone. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, starts the process by measuring the location of the choke tape using a bore gage. He then sets a stop collar on the Sunnen hone to prevent polishing that surface. Once the stop collar is set, the bore is oiled with a honing lubricant and the hone is inserted in the barrel. The hone is turned at a medium speed until enough material is removed that the polishing stones need to be tightened. This process is repeated using progressively finer stones until the desired finish is reached.

  • Does Pitting removing technique effects the thickness / strength and Bore of The barrel ?????

  • @gundabacha11 Generally speaking, pitting removal will not be detrimental to the structural integrity of the barrel however you should always consult with a qualified gunsmith.
