NC State was a team of destiny. I remember when they had to win the ACC Tournament to be sure they'd get in to the NCAA tourney, which back then was only a 48 team field. Very emotional ESPY speech when his life was about to heartbreakingly be cut short by that dreaded C word. He died only ten years after this amazing 1983 tournament. I also read a stirring book written by his younger brother BOB about their lives. V really made his mark during his far too short (47 years old)of life.

The song is "All Right" by Cross, it was also used at the end of CBS 84' Tournament Preview.

I am a die hard Carolina fan, but I remember this game. I was in third grade, and I was so happy for state. Great game, definitely one of the best finishes and biggest upsets in NCAA history.

CBS has the corniest songs with their year-end montages, but I agree about Jimmy V. He seemed like a great guy. It was good to see a guy like that win a ring. He almost went back to the Final Four in 85 and 86, but lost in the Elite 8. He was also jobbed in 89 against G-Town in the sweet 16. This could have just been his first ring, not last.

He was a stand up guy! I met him back in 85. He is missed by many NC State fans.

I met him at NCSU in 1988 when he was the BB coach and Athletic Director! Will be missed always. ;-)

Thank you Jimmy V and 83 team for so much. Now Sidney carries the torch of hope, dignity and the spirit of never giving up. We love you Coach V and miss you so much. Thank you, Coach Lowe, for a GREAT first year and for bringing a spirit to this school that it has not seen for so long. So much more than basketball!
