LYRICS;
Operator, number please, it's been so many years
And she'll remember my old voice, while I fight the tears
Hello, hello there is tis Martha? This is old Tom Frost
And I am calling long distance, don't worry about the cost
It's been 40 years or more, now Martha please recall
And meet me out for coffee, where we'll talk about it all

And those were the days of roses
Poetry and prose and Martha
And all I had was you and all you had was me
And there was no tomorrow's as we packed away our sorrows
And we saved it for a rainy day

And I feel so much older now and you're much older too
Oh how's the husband and how's the kids?
You know that I got married too!
Oh lucky that you found someone to make you feel secure
Oh cause we were all so young and foolish and now we are mature

And those were the days of roses
Poetry and prose and Martha
And all I had was you and all you had was me
And there was no tomorrow's as we packed away our sorrows
And we saved it for a rainy day

And I was always so impulsive, I guess that I still am
But all that really mattered then was that I was a man
I guess that our being together was never meant to be
Oh but Martha, Martha I love you can't you see

And those were the days of roses
Poetry and prose and Martha
And all I had was you and all you had was me
And there was no tomorrow's as we packed away our sorrows
And we saved it for a rainy day

And I remember quiet evenings trembling close to you

  • Okay . . . I'm not a huge Meatloaf fan . . . but damn people!! The man is honoring the great Tom Waits!! Of course no other can touch Tom singing this song . . . but this is a heartfelt tribute to Waits . . . and he is singing like he means it . . . like it or not . . . I have so much respect for artists who pay homage to their heroes and influences. Good on you Meatloaf! Hats off to you! The rest of you, get off your pretentious, musical high horses.

  • @jubjub2112 Exactly. Couldn't have said it better myself. I don't know why some people feel it's some kind of sin to admit that a cover can be great too. I think the original song is wonderful, and this is a really nice tribute to it, sang wholehearted way. So just can quote jubjub, get off your high horses and don't be hating, in case you don't like it, do not listen to it, easy as that.

  • @OutlawMCC 2006 was a bad year for him on live shows, it was evident that the cyst he had was taking its toll, but you could tell on the 3 Bats Live show that he was still trying to give it everything he had. It would be different if he had a "I don't give a shit" attitude about live shows, but you know you're getting his best ever, even if he doesn't perform up to his high as hell standards on that night.

You also should give Hell In A Handbasket a chance, though! Trust me!

  • @darkpowrjd Stone Cold Sobre from memory, the guy is a thief performing Live these Days, I stand by what I said, but I guess not calling you a retard, I will take that back lol

  • @OutlawMCC Umm...so you were drunk when you were commenting? That might explain some things!

Oh, and this version kicks ass! Just so you know.

  • @darkpowrjd Ha Ha , never get mad on the Internet Mate, but get me down the local pub , watch out 8)

  • @OutlawMCC You mad, bro?

Try to actually make a complete sentence next time you try to convey a thought!

  • I absolutely adore this song! Makes me cry everytime I hear it.

Gotta be honest, I prefer Meatloaf's version. I generally prefer Meatloaf's music and have been listening to him since I was wee little. I think he puts more passion and emotion into this, with that fantastic voice of his. That's not to say that Tom Waits' version is bad and no disrespect to him what so ever for writing this absolute masterpiece! Just personal preference is all. I also happen to have a boy "Martha" :) memories! <3

  • martha was a good old girl!!

  • @OutlawMCC ;-)

  • @jubjub2112 Cheers Man

  • @OutlawMCC Welllllllllllllllllllllllll Done!!
