Chimp funeral. The group were silent and embraced one another. This is not "normal" behavior for an animal. This video is for educational review. Share your thoughts and feelings. Thank you.

Prelude: This is the story of Dorothy, a chimpanzee that was orphaned when her mother was killed for bushmeat (food for poachers). She was sold to an amusement park as a baby. For the next 25 years of her life, Dorothy was tethered to the ground with a chain around her neck. Taught to smoke cigarettes and drink beer. She was constantly teased and was thrown scraps by tourists and passersby. Chained near her was a male chimp named Nama who was placed further away from the reach of the thrown scraps, so far that he barely received any food at all. He became malnourished as Dorothy became overweight. They could see one another, but could not touch and comfort each other. Nama was there 15 years compared to Dorothy's 25 years. Imagine being able to see one of your own kind but never being able to come in contact with them for 15 years! They both quickly gained their health back upon arriving at The Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in Cameroon. Nama went on to be very close friends with the alpha male, Jacky(they are pictured hugging each other in the video). Dorothy became the mother of an orphaned male chimp named Bouboule, whom she loved as one of her own. The rest of the story lies in the video. Enjoy.

  • I was so touched by some of the comments, as well as the story.....

  • @Miley1000Cyrus thx for posting.

  • What made humans think that we're the only ones that can feel joy, worried, sadness, pain, loneliness, etc? Besides chimps, elephants also show great signs of emotion, but I truly believe that ALL living things are capable of and DO have feelings.

  • @66SiK yes they do. nice comment :))

  • Bummer they took off the other version, Thank heavens you have this still.

  • @marshaincc yeah that was also a moving version. oh well. thx for checking in :))

  • Thanks Jug. Your's is the only intelligent comment on this page.

Humans have been too removed, for too long, from the farm. They have come to believe only what is put in front of their very narrow field of 'vision.' Dogs, cats, birds, pigs, cows, elephants, dolphins, etc., etc.....all demonstrate emotion. Chimps are not unique among animals.

  • Whats so special about this? Only a total mental handicap thinks that animals dont have emotions.

  • @juggep80 this is the most discriminating comment ever ! what's wrong with mental handicapped ??? my son is a mental handicapped and he does know that animals do have emotions. You are probably the one who doesnt understant the meaning of such pictures

  • Frankly I wonder if the human animal has nearly as much feelings as the non-human animals. I wonder that more and more. Humans can learn a lot from the other animals on this planet

  • Notice that they keep the "grieving relatives" behind metal fencing, rather than allow them direct contact with the body.

That's to prevent them from eating their dearly beloved's corpse.

  • Who sang this rendition?

  • This is a beautiful tribute to a very special chimpanzee. I was honored to meet Dorothy when she was alive: a beautiful soul and respected leader. (I also love Sarah Vaughan). I wanted to correct someone below who said all chimpanzees in sanctuaries are sterilized. At Sanaga-Yong and others, the females are given birth control pills. There is still the possibility of reintroduction someday, so sterilization is not a good option. Thanks to Planned Parenthood who make generous donations!

  • I HATE that She had to Spend 25 yrs Chained. BUT I am so Happy she Was able to Be Happy with other Chimps for 8 Years, She deserved to Have that life for her entire life.

  • all animals deserve better care and treatment and should be bought up along with their own families like humans its sad seperating them at a very young age. hope people learn as soon asn

  • I just returned from the sanctuary recently and for anyone who is interested Dorothy's adopted son Bouboule is now the alpha male of the group.

  • so how do we justify chaining them up, hunting them, experimenting on them, and referring to them as "pets" or "assets" that we own?

  • Oh dear!

    I actually cried! :(

I'm glad that at the end of the day, she was surrounded by her group. she was well loved. she was happy and that is what is important.

Imagine if she died while she was still chained...the people who chained would probably just throw her somewhere.

I salute all organizations who rescue animals! Know that by this video your efforts are not wasted!
