It almost looks like the Ref acts like there is something on the kids face (a bug) and flicks it off, but with the real intent to sort of mush the kid to teach him a lesson. It's like he tried to disguise it so he couldn't get in trouble for it and play it off if anyone saw it. Am I totally wrong on this?

YES! this is so wrong but so right at the same time. High school kids are the biggest punks. Most aren't so serious as they care more about their club. This ref should never be out there again tho, inappropriate NO matter the circumstance.
