HEY! I'm 17 years old and I've been watching Rick Mercer's rant for as long as I can remember.. My parents introduced me to this hour has 22 minutes when I was a youngyoungin and from then on This hour has 22 minutes and Rick mercer spin off the RMR have been a good part of my tv life.. :P We're not all bumbling idiots my friend.
I'm no expert, Ducks. I think that it says that people with an opinion are the types of people they want at MUN. And there is a contest part, to do a rant. If it works, and they get those kinds of innovative students interested, like the few who have brought it up in my class, then I think it works. Seeing these ads makes me think MUN is brave, clever, and modern. Those aren't bad attributes, as a MUN grad. My students wouldn't watch this being discussed on a local channel.
I wasn't trying to imply that students are shallow, nor that this advertisement is too mature for them to understand. This ad, and its sequel bring up some big questions that plague many potential university students. However, they do very little in actually helping MUN recruit these students. I still firmly believe that these ads are a massive waste of money, and the topics they bring up would be better discussed on a local channel.
Wow, the advertisement is not about Rick Mercer, it's about ranting, kind of like what you just did. I'm a teacher, and several of my students have been infected (in a good way) with this campaign. I think you are projecting a bit. Talk about not doing your homework. For what it's worth, they'd see through "a spin-off of the O.C." - high school students are not as shallow as you think they are. And they all know who Rick is (see previous shallow comment).
This ad does little for directly helping MUN recruitment, and it indirectly helps competing universities. I can't quite understand the logic behind the entire campaign. Rick Mercer certainly doesn't aim to appeal to 17-18 year olds, and his show definitely isn't popular within that market. I mean damn, make a spinoff of the OC or something; couldn't be much worse! Do your homework, MUN Marketing, and stop wasting a ridiculous amounts of money on campaigns like this.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of this ad series. The sequel to this one is terrible, bahh....
However I can say some great things about MUN. Many students take it for granted, but the more traveling I do on work terms and exchanges - the more I realize the quality of the education I'm getting.
I'm sad to see that people are sending a negative vibe here about MUN, but that's your opinion, and your entitled to it. My opinion as a 4th year student? I love this University, it's a great place to study and has some pretty amazing facilities... and as far as Newfoundland and the people who live here goes, I love the place, I don't ever want to leave. Definitely the friendliest & happiest people I've come across.

I ask you, what is the major goal of these ads?
