Do a search on 'Cal-Stanford "The Play to beat the Band"' and watch that 1:33 video. It CLEARLY shows that Garner's knee was down BEFORE he pitched the ball and that the last lateral was forward as the ball leaves the player's hands at the 28-yard line and Rodgers catches it at the 26-yard line. That is an ILLEGAL forward pass. The facts are that Garner's knee was down before pitching the ball and there was a forward lateral. cal lost the game. Check it out for yourself.

Kapp actually wasn't a very good coach. He lost far more than he won and was outcoached just about every game. Believe me, I witnessed many of them. I'm not one of those Cal "fans" who only started going to the football games when they started winning after Tedford showed up. When the sports program was in the toilet and the football lost and lost during the Holmoe years, the stadium was half empty. Where were all of these fans then? I'm sure if Cal starts losing again, they'll go away again.

hey abbey, i've seen every replay, and 3D recreation, Garner's knee WAS NOT down, he got the ball off before the knee hit the ground. Cal won, the trees lost...END OF STORY

@bearscanyon Back a few years ago, the Bears were so down you could sneak into Memorial at half time and move anywhere in the place you wanted to sit. Mostly for nonconference games but it wasn't that much better for the pac10.. We were awful but it's gotten alot better, though the Bears still find a way of breaking my heart every year.

Not that I didn't believe you, but you made me curious to look up stats on the Bears during the Kapp era. No major or minor bowl games and an overall losing record pretty much sums it up. Individual stats are hard to compare vs PAC-10 opps, because I couldn't find a complete conference table. The Play only makes Kapp a 'legendary footnote' coach. It is Kapp's belief in team concepts that is well-known as his raison d'etre. Instead of quarterback, he'd prefer to be called a football player.

I thought that Kapp was a good, hard-nosed quarterback who was a great runner and a so-so passer. As a coach, I thought that he was very inspirational as a leader, but quite poor as a game decision maker who was usually far behind the opposition coach in strategy. He'd be great at recruiting, but poor once the game started. His glaring lack of skills as a coach put a generally average Cal team at a competitive disadvantage and cost Cal several wins over his tenure. I was very glad when he left.

Kapp may not have been a prolific college football coach, but his Cander was very entertaining. Iv never forgotten how great an NFL quarterback he was. He was never at a loss for words.
