Tom Ash performs his song Up In The World

English born singer-songwriter Tom Ash presents a number of his original songs. Ash was born in 1980 in Harold Wood just within the reaches of the M25 and Greater London. He grew up in a household where music was rarely silenced. His mother, Lila, ensured the sounds of the 50s, 60s and 70s echoed from the walls. The likes of Elvis Presley, The Bee Gees, The Byrds and The Carpenters were often played; at other times the music would spread to the realms of Mozart, Handel and Pachelbel.

At the age of seven, Ash recalls producing a melody with a friend in the playground. A song that would later be called Sometimes; and a song he can still remember the lyrics to. Ash grew up in Essex and learnt to play the piano and violin at the age of eight, he later joined the schools chamber-choir until the age of thirteen when he moved to his quintessential English town of Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk. He studied Music at GCSE although lost grades on Composition after his teacher recognised a melody from a small piece of work by, the little known, Mozart. Though Ash refuted the claims of copying existing notation', he walked away with a D Grade.

Like many teens at the time, Ash was inspired by bands such as The Charlatans, Embrace, Oasis, Shed Seven and many others that paved the way for the 'Britpop' era. He is still a huge fan of The Verve and Richard Ashcroft who he claims to be 'one of the few people that can inspire him at the drop of a hat'.

In 2001, Ash moved to Manchester and it wasn't until the following Spring that he picked up a guitar for the first time. He remembers 'walking down Market Street and loading up on chord-books by The Verve, Oasis and The Beatles'. During a night out with his brother in 2003, Ash was introduced to a 'friend of a friend', Jack Carpenter. Even though the intial feelings towards each other were mixed, they met again the following week for a few pints in Revolution on Oxford Road. They immediately 'hit it off' and Carpenter invited Ash to sing with his punk-rock band (at the time) called The Superfinks at the Greenhouse in Stockport. The band would later be renamed Corbieres, a gesture to the subterranean bar on Half Moon Street which, at the time, had the 'best duke-box in town'. With Ben Martin on drums and Ed Warnke on bass, Corbieres spent the next few years playing the Manchester circuit including the Academy, Dry Bar, The Late Rooms, Thirsty Scholar and Jackson's Pit.

Over the years, a number of songs were written by Ash that would struggle to fit under the 'punk-rock' genre. His songs, though heart-felt at times, also long for a time when England seemed to be a nation full of 'the charms that build the pride that we're known'. These songs have been made public for the first time on You Tube.

We hope you enjoy them.

Tom Ash lives in Gatley, Cheshire with his beloved wife, Jane and baby-girl, Constance Lila May. He still writes music today.
