The Australian, Labor Party government introduced a tax on carbon emissions in October 2011. This initiative was fought by the opposition Liberal Party leader, Tony Abbott, a one time catholic seminarian who (by his own admission) preferred the wild side of life to a cloistered existence. Abbott maintained a curiously ambivalent attitude towards counteracting global warming, espousing it as part of his party platform to some audiences, while dismissing it as crap to others. However his ambition to become prime minister has never wavered

  • It’s nice to get feedback so can I suggest you take a look at the Carbon Tax Rally video. It makes the point that even if the scientists were wrong, even if it was all crap, the carbon lies really amount to the idea that people should clean up their own mess - the economists call it “internalizing the externalities”

  • I seem to remember an election in which the Libs ran on a GST platform and won. I don’t seem to recall any anti-GST rallies of late. In fact the Business Council of Australia seems to be suggesting we replace income tax with GST. Getting people to clean up their own mess (carbon tax - carbon trading) is another good idea.

  • @raiderhayseed That is democracy and that is how the system works. We do not live in lets have an election on every single issue. And who would want governments to run to the polls

  • @raiderhayseed They won the election but lost the popular vote, and the democrats ran on a "no gst" ticket. How do I know I campaigned against them. Both the then Howard government did not have a popular mandate, nor did the democrats. They both did it anyway

  • @raiderhayseed The Rudd/Gillard government tried to legislate Carbon Trading. The Greens blocked that move, demanding a Carbon Tax. Messrs Oakeshott and Windsor cited Climate Change measures as important in their decision to make Gillard PM. Gillard legislated for Carbon Trading after a set period Carbon Tax. That’s democracy in action

  • @raiderhayseed The GST is the biggest tax impost in Australia's history. it was introduced by a political party who lost the mandate of the people, that party was the liberal party. Grow up
