It may not look the best under dirt, but you can make glass panes (six glass blocks on a crafting bench in the same arrangement as a fence) which are more attractive then glass blocks. Also, you should go looking for different kinds of seeds to plant in your farm. You can find melon seeds in abandoned mine shafts and craft pumpkins into seeds :)

@mastereddie92 Yeah that stuff bothers me too, I'd like to get a ton of wool but maybe I'll just use stone instead since wool gathering is insanely time consuming...

If you put string in a 4x4 box in the crafting bench, you get a wool block!

You can use wheat to breed sheep. Then you can have a whool farm and not have to travel to that far to get it
