I bought one and it fished sideways?

for some reason the prawnstars don't seem to work as well as softies and hardbodies for me when i am fishing in the river for jacks barra bream etc

The slower you fish the prawnstar the better it performs. It is best used casting at structure and sinking right down into the base of snags which you cant do with a lot of lures. I do a fair bit of drift fishing over structure jigging the prawnstar at depth with great success.
