Like last year, some friends and I participated in the 48 hour film festival, occurring over the weekend of June 12-14, 2009. If you're not familiar with the festival, it's basically a national contest (each week occurring in a different state) where each group has 48 hours to shoot, edit, and produce a short video/film.
Each group is given a genre, prop, character, and line of dialogue that must be used at some point in the video. Our group was given the genre of mockumentary, a sandwich for a prop, Kevin Schnabel for a character, and "I hope they decide soon" as the line of dialogue. Since we had "mockumentary" we decided to treat this like any other mocumentary where-in we allowed crew to be in some shots, shot mostly hand-held, and used a large amount of improve and ad-lib. It seemed to work quite well, especially with the talented actors we had.
After last year's disaster, I'm pleased to say that things this year went much much better. We learned a lot from last year and were way more organized and did well in developing an idea, script and schedule. Our film was a nominee for best screenwriting, though we did not win an award.
The result is what you see. I always look back and think about what I'd change or add if we have more time, but really that's what it's all about - a strict timeline. Overall, I'm please with what we ended up with. Until next year!
