I think it is amazing how small F1 cars used to be... not that they are huge now, but the top down view really makes the scant dimensions obvious. Great post. The P34 was brilliant.

The Tyrrell P34 "six-wheeler" was not banned. It was reasonably competitive in it's first season ('76) with Scheckter taking an outright win at Sweden. The problem was that Michelin had made one of their periodic re-entries into F-1 so Goodyear wasn't developing the special front tire for the car. It became less and less competitive and was abandoned after the '77 season. The rules for F-1 now state exactly 4 wheels as the max (and min) number, but this was not the case at the time.

it thought it was like it had one good season, but at the next season it did just OK so they decided to go back to 4 wheels

That was a go-cart, and it looked like a lot of fun. There was a 6 wheeled race car from the 60-70 era that dominated racing so much they banned it, anyone know what it was called?
