  • Maybe this is child abuse

  • @jnbaxtor11 (cont. from above)

So unless you specifically control for height across samples one cannot tell WHAT variables are actually correlating with whatever measures of health or disease (because of the ambiguity of what a BMI score indicates at the level of the individual).

  • @darepow What is your point?

BMI is flawed as a measure of obesity, not to mention that epidemiological study you reference (citation please!) cannot show causation.

As for "underweight" - being extremely short can put a person in this category (mathematical artifact of BMI calculations). Being nutritionally deprives can stunt growth. Hence, you cannot tell if poor health is stunting growth, or low-weight is causing poor health...or any other combination.

  • @darepow BMI CANNOT be applied to individuals.

It's common practice to do so, but it's complete BS. The taller one is, the higher their BMI, even compared to an exact scaled (shorter) version of themselves.

PART of the obesity "epidemic" is the fact we're getting taller across generations, plus for the US, the fact you have a significant minority of citizens of African decent, who are on average taller than other ethnic groups.

Conclusion: BMI is bullshit. Please don't reference it.

  • @livestellar Really? You have children who need nutritious foods in order to function both physically and MENTALLY at school - and sustained energy from things like whole-grains, so they don't have a spike in their blood sugar, then a huge crash - yet you think this is an appropriate breakfast?

Once in a while - sure, a bagel won't kill them, but rubbish like this on a regular basis WILL affect children physically and cognitively. It's definitely inappropriate.

  • @Bjorkadmirer Agreed! Bagels are an "occasional" food, not a regular breakfast item - absolute nutritionally void rubbish!

I'm kind of shocked that people think this is an appropriate breakfast food for growing children. No-wonder the USA is full of people who are both overweight AND malnourished!

  • When my wife would watch some co-workers children, she found out what they liked and we made adjustments to make them feel comfortable at our house. such an easy thing (most of the time) taking care of children. People make it seem so difficult these days. Here's a tip, are you ready? JUST PAY ATTENTION TO THEM. /rant

  • Since when is a young child wanting cereal instead of a bagel for breakfast being spoiled? Goodness, when I was 6, I ate Fruitloops. What's wrong with Fruitloops? That daycare lady doesn't sound like the kind of person I'd want to watch my kids (if I had any kids).

  • It sounds like the girls were at an age that there voice could be heard, and their mom did the appropriate thing.
