The tune is a Swedish folk song, best known in the English-speaking world for versions by jazz artists such as Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Paul Chambers and John Coltrane's Impressions album.
The original Swedish title is "Ack Värmeland, du sköna"/"Värmlandsvisan". The song was originally written by the Värmlandian Anders Fryxell in his musical "Vermlandsflickan" (The Värmlandian Girl).
The song is about the county "Värmland" in Sweden and was subsequently incorporated 1846 in F.A. Dahlgren's play "Värmlänningarna" (The Värmlandians). In Sweden, this composition is often performed as an anonymous treasure of the Swedish folksong tradition.

Värmland is a historical province or "landskap" in the west of middle Sweden. It borders Västergötland, Dalsland, Dalarna, Västmanland and Närke. It is also bounded by Norway in the west. The origin of the name is uncertain. It may refer to a lake by that name, or to a river.

Värmland (gammalsvenska: Wermland; latin Vermeladia) är ett landskap i Svealand i västra Sverige. Värmland gränsar i söder till Västergötland och Dalsland, i väster till Norge och i öster till Dalarna, Västmanland och Närke. I landskapet finns 5 500 kända fornlämningar.
Landskapet tillhör i huvudsak Värmlands län och Karlstad stift. Södra Råda församling (i Gullspångs kommun) tillhör dock Västra Götalands län och Skara stift, medan Degerfors och Karlskoga kommuner tillhör Örebro län.
