Review by Scott Yanow: Weather Report's fourth recording finds Wayne Shorter (on soprano and tenor) taking a lesser role as Joe Zawinul begins to really dominate the group's sound. Most selections also include bassist Alphonso Johnson and drummer Ishmael Wilburn although the personnel shifts from track to track. "Nubian Sundance" adds several vocalists while "Blackthorn Rose" is a Shorter-Zawinul duet. Overall the music is pretty stimulating and sometimes adventurous; high-quality fusion from 1974.
timeless indeed

Wow, now this is some different but very cool sounding stuff. I always liked WR but it's been years since I really took a good listen. This is what happens when you walk down a bunch of different roads.

@bptr85 NOT sure about better. I think different would have been the word to use.

The piano yelling its presents to the world is telling us something else too. Its preparing us for his wind brothers who calm and sooth the soul with their subtle whispers in the darkness of the night. A timeless piece.

The only way this could have been better is with Jaco and Acuna.

This is a Wayne Shorter composed piece and the best one the album. He was by far the better composer in Weather Report, and their music eventually died primarily because he stopped being the dominant player in the ensemble for whatever reason. His new band is without question in the best contemporary Jazz today.
