IT IS WHAT IT IS FOLKS! THIS IS NOT PRO SHOT ITS A HOME MOVIE! IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT THEN I'M SORRY MATE......... ANYWAY This is the famous Michigan Theatre in Detroit that was turned into a parking garage. The theatre opened in 1926. In the early 70's the theatre was reopened as a concert venue called the Michigan Palace. Bands like the New York Dolls, David Bowie and The Stooges played there. On February 9th, 1974 Iggy and the Stooges played their last show at the Michigan Palace. To here clips of the show search for Metallic K.O. on Amazon.com. The show is on the first disc. In the early 80's the theatre was gutted and turned into a parking garage. Because of its unique look the Michigan has been used as a set in a few film productions. Even local folk hero Eminem stopped by to shoot some scenes for his epic blockbuster smash hit 8 Mile.

It may be sad to see such a beautiful building turned into a parking garage, but what choice to they have? If they couldn't pay the upkeep by using it as a theatre, there was no other use for it.
As a Detroiter, this hits all too close to home. I love historic buildings mainly because we will NEVER build structures as beautiful as this again. I am sure the train station off Michigan avenue will soon meet a similar fate. How sad indeed.
This is absolutely heartbreaking. Seems like taken right out of an armageddon movie. It is a sad display of our indifference towards the nostalgic and historical. We're losing our souls with every structured that we pillage (sorry, "repurpose") for money.
I'm from Miami and many of our historical structures have been demolished to make way for shiny new condos. Although I welcome progress, I hate that it's at the cost of the architecture that made us glorious in the first place.
I am a contractor that has worked in this building MANY, MANY times in the last 10 years. I have been through every part of this building and there is much more than what you see here.....it is very sad indeed to see such an impressive devastation.
This is such a sad display of what people do for money. What a waste! Detroit has some gems, but this just shows that its people have completely lost faith in what makes the city so wonderful!
