About AjantaMusic,
Paul and Robin Simon began their careers in music forming bands in their home town of Halifax, Yorkshire. One such band included Billy Currie, later to join Robin in Ultravox. They were then asked to join Limmie Snell [Limmie and the Family Cookin'] in Limmie Funk Limited, which toured the UK.
In 1976, the brothers found themselves in London, at the heart of the punk scene around The Roxy Club and The Vortex. They had been introduced by Billy Currie to a protégé of Eno's called Ian North, newly arrived at Island Records from New York. The band they formed together began as Radio and featured Martin Gordon (Sparks) on bass, Ian and Robin on guitar, and Paul as drummer. This evolved into Neo. (Martin's Radio Stars, in which Paul played drums, were an offshoot.)
After Neo, Paul joined Cowboys International, via Girls At Our Best and The Fallout Club (featuring Thomas Dolby), while Robin joined Ultravox and Magazine. As the 80s progressed, Paul worked in production with frequent Paul McCartney and George Martin collaborator Fiachra Trench, occasionally joined by Robin, and Tony Lowe. Robin continued to tour and record with John Foxx, occasionally joined by Paul. Tony Lowe, meanwhile, worked with Visage, Pet Shop Boys, and Julian Lennon.
By the early 90s, Paul had joined long-time friend Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols) in The Mavericks, which became The Philistines, while Robin had been reunited with Billy Currie in Humania. The brothers also recorded jointly with John Foxx and Sue Rachel as Blitz.
Ajanta Music evolved from an experimental touring-only line-up, formed by Paul and Robin, which had travelled the world throughout the 90s. As the millennium dawned, they arrived on Ibiza. The influence of the musical fusion and chill-out scenes in the north of the island, filtered through their previous musical experience, crystallised into Ajanta Music.
