http://davidkassan.com A three camera mash up video filmed and edited by the talented Nuno Fontainhas from an hour and a half demonstration that I did for the Artistas Sociedade de Faro (OS Artistas) in Faro Portugal. A very quick study for me but a lot of fun to do. See more work at http://davidkassan.com.
David got the features the first time he saw the model, the optical aid was used to look at the boobs... Epic paper shaping skills, Dave! :)

LOL talk about optical aids and devices.....this artist seems happy to use one any way.....he has phenomenal ability to model the facial forms, but would the detail be so accurate and sharp without his binoculars?

Hi: have you posted anywhere what tools you use, ie. type and color of paper, type of pencils, and what is the tool you use for the big dark blocked areas? thanks!

About the earlier questions, David is using Pentax Papillio close-focusing binoculars (used as a monocular) to see details. He is blocking in with black 'Pan Pastel' which is powder pastel, applied with a softtool, which is a sort of plastic trowel with some sponge over the end. His DVD about his technique and approach is very worthwhile buying. He is one of those artists who talks you through everything he does and why. Very generous with his knowledge.

@imkosherdillbill It's a light blue plastic palette knife called a Sofft. It comes with differently shaped nibs that I think personally rip after one or two drawings but they lay down ground up vine charcoal like you're painting with it. I have everyone in class hooked on it.

Pretty sure those are binoculars, and I'm tempted to try something similar. Seating myself far away from the model would give me a better focus on the broad forms and shapes and then I can use binoculars later on to hone in on the details.
