The One Show's Jay Rayner investigates meat substitutes. He visits Alex Connell at the Vegetarian Society's Cordon Vert Cookery School to taste several meat substitutes, and he talks with biologist Prof Brian Ford about the potential of lab grown meat and the unsustainability of current meat production.
As a committed carnivore Jay is never likely to be converted: "(I'm) somebody who doesn't really like his dinner unless it's ever had a pulse". However, while he turns his nose up at fake bacon, he is partial to some of the vegetarian sausages. He also accepts that the meat substitutes "are nutritious, low in fat and high in protein", and even accepts the benefits of meat reduction and the 'Meat Free Mondays' campaign.
Presenter Alex Jones is convinced, favouring a Quorn spaghetti bolognese over the meat alternative. However, Chris Evans won't eat anything that doesn't have fat or meat in it, and cruelly opines "when it comes to flavour, death is depth."
