Oddly enough this is my favorite Led Zepplin song. It is brilliant! I always thought this would be a great song to use in a western.

Oh yes... and the the bass is also the beating of the heart in the executioner, Again, BRILLIANT!!!

In my opinion this is one of the best examples of Pages expertise in layering tracks. Not only is he able to evoke emotion and excitement but paints a graphic picture in the minds eye of the listener. All of this is done by the awesome performances of all involved. The build up of tension within the tracks by the use of instrumentation alone is incredible. Bonhams drums makes me envision horses at full gallop. The throbbing bass is the heart beating in the accused as well as the horse. Brilliant!

I may be wrong, but 'Gallow's Pole' was actually euphemism for a Cheese enduced night terror, or pavor caseus nocturnus. Lead Belly, the iconic folk and blues musician suffered terribly from these terrors but refused point blank to cutail his insatiable lust for fine Cheddar.
A sympton of night terrors is hallucination which is masterfully illustrated in the lyrics, calling upon his friends, brother and sister to save him from his cheese enhanced alarm.
Great song though

zeppelin @ their best, just get chills listening to Bonham
This comes from a 19th. century collection of Scot/English peotry and ballads collected and edited by Francis James Child. This happens to be child ballad #95 known as "The maid freed from the gallows" Many artists have "borrowed" lyrics from such including Clapton, Zep and many others...Have you heard Ledbelly's version of House of the rising sun from the 30's or 40's?

I have all their albums. Every song I've ever heard them do is a hit. And that's no joke. They are unlike any other band; EVERYTHING they do is magical.
