In this excerpt, Marsha Chan leads a low-level English class at Mission College (Santa Clara, California, USA) a Bingo using words with short vowels. Prior to the game, the class has studied Lessons 1 and 2 of Everyday Spelling Workbook by Elaine Kirn. In this version of Bingo, while getting five words in a row is the game objective, the instructional objectives include vocabulary development, written word attack, written spelling, oral spelling, pronunciation and listening. The students were randomly assigned to be seated 4 per table so that they could help each other. For example, some students need help with pronunciation, while others need help with word recognition.
