I start to wonder exactly how good History Channels facts are.. in the #1 video the talked about Lindisfarne and then went to Sweden and now they say that Birka were the most important and wealthy trading center in Scandinavia, Hedeby in Denmark were much bigger than Birka and a place with a unknown name in today's uppåkra in skåne (Sweden) where twice the size of hedeby (Denmarks biggest city in the viking age) and at least seven times the size of Birka. History channel have interesting facts..

Pfft. Danish and Swedish vikings? The Norwegians were the real vikings! Think of Iceland, Greenland, Vinland(North America) etc. We were also responsible for most of the raids on the british Isles.
-
hehe your right, and if a guy from denmark hears swedish or norwegian he will understand too.
-
@SwedishViking1988 det är klart att svenskarna åkte med norskarna och danskarna, du har helt rätt.
-
@yahmanization thats untrue to be honest. The Swedes did spend time on trade, but they didnt spend any time less on plundering. There are runestones that are saying Swedes went west with the norwegians and danes aswell. To see Swedes only being traders are kinda narrow. Im from Skåne so I dont really trying to boost the Swedes viking history as the ones from Skåne probably went with the danes anyway.
-
@Andrekky this were in the late period i guess? and for how long did it last? the turks crushed him anyway
-
viking is not some thing you are its something you do
-
The reputation that made the Swedish vikings appointed as the bodyguard of the Byzantine Emperor in all his glory did not come from mere trade, though.. ;)
-
the swedes mostly did trade around the world, the danes and the norwegians plundred, killed, raped and drank mead until they died, got to "valhalla" and drank some more :)
@tianlarka1 National identities and governments were not nearly as organized as they were after scandanavia was christianized. Even now, a Swede can speak Swedish to Norwegians and they will understand (and vice versa). They are not very different. I would wager they recognized regional allegiances more than national allegiances because Norway and Sweden as we know them today did not have central governments.
